Looking at these covers I feel an urge to peel off those nasty words from either ‘myself’ (viewing it as a reflection) or from the unaware (so vulnerable) friend. I want to break the link between the violence and death message and the smiley, health, happy woman.
I may not be able to peel those headlines off her body, but I can do something a bit similar ……… turn the page.
I hope this has been at least a little insightful, even if not necessarily a ‘correct’ analysis.

Lastly, the cover women might also represent the reader herself. Or at least the reader identifies with the women on the covers. Whether accidental of not the main horrific headlines tend to appear not only in the bottom right corner but also on top off the women, right across their bodies. The women are oblivious to the messages and their horrific meaning and are in a sense standing behind these headlines.

Also some women are quite repressed/timid on their own, very much aware of how society/men will judge them - but are much more daring/ adventurous in the company of another women because they can laugh off any negative attention they might get and pretend they are just being silly. The women on the cover acts as a girlfriend in this way inviting her to explore these horrid but intriguing stories as a team.

Women when away from men naturally warn each other of potential danger eg “Don’t ever let John in accounts take you out on a date, he seems OK but is a womanizer and when he’s drunk he’s not safe”. The women pictured on the covers act as a friend like this, they are not aloof glamour models but smiley, friendly everyday women with gossip and important information to tell (potentially life or death information for her or her family).

Women are alway seeking practical knowledge and insight, shared experiences, ‘gossip’ about men in the workplace, recipes, sales, make up tips- it may seem frivolous and girly but underneath is all about gaining knowledge and intelligence through a network of spies (other women!). “Men compete, women conspire”. Women use this knowledge to help stay attractive (to get or hold on to a man), or for looking after/providing for their man or family or (in this case) to avoid danger!

Don’t know if this theory has been mentioned (I’ve not read many comments here) but I see at least two levels of manipulation.
First is to exploit the natural protection and caring instincts (for self, offspring and family) of the target market: women, especially women alone (without men present) either at home during day or during work lunch breaks when they are going to be exposed to these mags and have the time to read them.

Had a few girlfriend’s myself whose egos were constantly in pieces due to these magazines. It was what made me take notice of these mags in the first place.

My sentiments exactly. I cannot understand for the life of me why women find these magazines interesting.

What a nasty horrible magazine! And I think really weird all that horror histories covering the page with a smilling pretty woman behind: it gives us the felling that’s everybody killing each other outside, but that’s ok, ’cause I’m young and beautiful.. like this kind of drama just don’t happens with beautifful, young and rich ppl, just the regular ppl. Gives us the felling that’s 2 sick and twisted reallity…

I wouldn’t say this magazine on it’s own has a big effect, but I do think the bombardment of this kind of material across the board (although usually more subtle) on a daily basis effects ppl unconsciously and makes them fear each other more than they need to. I’m not saying the magazine should be banned, because I believe in free speech, but making a lot of ppl think more about the issues could make them turn to more worthwhile reading material. Thanks for the rating

Well i think all they want to do is sell and if this is working for them, then they will do it.
Im not agree with they doing that…but “why do they sell it?” & it is not only in the magazine, some newspapers have that aswell.
And as someone said “is this real?” i mean how is possible that they get that histories every 15 days or whateva they make that magazine?..(i know u sort of explained b4)

my mother hates these magazines , but loves readding about murder/torture/rape. she finds the format to be stupid.
My grilfriend who i regard as very intellegent , buys these magazines sometimes , just for humor . its hard to know exactly why these mags sell.
and we never will know beacuse the writers , who make such statistical statements about womens ideas and “social position” are the very ones who are promoting this absolute shite !

Funnily enough, I was in a newsagents earlier today and noticed about 4 diff mags side by side with these same themes.
If I remember correctly several of those rags, including CHAT, are owned by IPC Media Ltd, and at the top level of the corporate hierarchy they fall under Time Warner ownership.

This sounds like a magazine for women who get off on fear. Or is it psychopath for women weekly. Does anyone know who publishes this rag?

Holy ****! No wounder alot of girl’s are reading FHM & Zoo these day’s.

Yeah I agree it’s not really subliminal, although a blatant message repeated over and over can eventually have a subliminal effect. I’m not even sure if all the horror stories they print are real - they do have ads offering people money to talk about abuse experiences, and so there is a motive for graphic embelishment on the part of those being interviewed.

I don’t know about subliminal messages, but that is definitely a horrible magazine. I don’t think we have anything quite like it in america. I wonder… I hope - they make up some of those stories. I mean, they have a new one every week. How do they come up with it?
By ginraw on Nov 2, 2007 | Reply
I wish I could think that big. I’ll have to keep up with what the media is trying to get across and not fall for their messages. Thanks Rob. =P Rob’s my name too.

Hmmm … just posted reply but hasn’t come up.
Anyway, am not trying to belittle you either so that’s cool
Obviously we’ve been looking at very different sources because both of us seem convinced the other is not doing enough research. Not much we can do about that.
I wouldn’t expect anyone to agree with all my vids either so no hard feelings.

nullified what and how? reread the statements. …carefully this time.
i’m not interested in educating you on the issue, nor am i interested in elevating my status by showing whatever ‘proofs’ you wish to see . if you’re interested, research it yourself. it is indeed an interesting subject, and one which i feel you may gain significant insight to your videos.
i’m not trying to belittle you, rob. i rather enjoy your posts, especially your insight to ‘the shinning’. keep it up!

If tv is less reliable than research journals (which i agree) then how is it propaganda if somebody says they stopped watching tv? You just nullified your own statement.
Regarding the social issues, which research journals/reports are you referring to specifically? (sorry but just saying ‘research journals’ proves nothing)
I’ll offer one for now … The MODs Global Strategic Trends Report, which gives a grim view of the next 30 years for most of the planet, inc the ‘globalized’ countries.

research journals. but don’t take my word for it, you look it up yourself if you’re interested.
