What magazines and papers should I read?
July 25th, 2009 | by magazines |Bethany asked:
I want to be a journalist. I suscribed to TIME magazine and try to read the paper to get an idea of what’s going on and some of the journalists points of view and styles of writing. Does anybody know of any other good magazines or papers I can read to better prepare myself for journalism?
Obviously I realize that I have to go to college for journalism. I just want some stuff to read in addition.

in a nut shell, read as much as you can, all of the time, from as many different sources as possible to avoid political bias and the glossing over of anything thats otherwise news worthy, you may never know what nuggets will turn up, even sometimes from the tabloids

TIME is the pinnacle of periodical literature, along with Newsweek, and the Wall Street Journal.
I always enjoy USA Today and Readers Digest which does a fine job of compressing information into short articles.
National Geographic always has extremely well written articles.
I suggest Automobile magazine because their writers do a remarkable job of conveying feelings, both physical and emotional, through non-typical adjectives and sentence construction. Playboy has some great writers, both contracted, freelance, and amateur.

I think it’s a good idea to read a variety. You don’t necessarily have to subscribe to all of them. Spending a couple of hours at the library browsing the magazines is both useful and free.
Personally, I don’t like Time or Newsweek. I find the Economist to be much better as a general world news magazine. I also like some leftist magazines such as the Progressive and the Nation.

also take a moment to listen to or watch the news show called democracy now at. while alot of the publications listed already are pretty good, try also to keep in mind that each of the publications the others have mentioned here are owned by large corporations, which can have a huge impact on what their news divisions write about or don’t write about. here is an example: nbc is owned by general electric, one of the largest defense contractors/manufacturers in the world…when you stop for a moment to think about this, the potential for these big companies exerting influence on news gathering can be a little concerning, to say the least…good luck to you.
