I have a background in mental health, counseling, and child and adolescent issues. I really want to jumpstart a new career by submitting articles to various magazines and get paid for it! I’m not looking to do journal articles, but things that are more mainstream.

If you have a handful of articles (which is to say, samples of your work) already written, you might try looking for privately-published, small magazines in your city or community. I live in a college town–by no means a “big city”–and even aside from student publications, there are several local mags and journals around here. Most of them cater to either specific groups or interests (”Sewing Weekly” type of stuff), and others are more community-oriented.

The problem is, they’ll either pay very little, or nothing at all. The good news is, having several of your articles published (even if you didn’t make a cent) gives you more leverage when you’re dealing with an actual paying gig.

Find a mag that you like and find the specific editor of the section that your articles might be published in. Get the persons contact info. Email them and let them know your background. Call them if possible. Submit a piece of your work only if they ask for it.

Familiarize yourself with mags that you are not familiar with, but would like to be published in. Don’t stop until you see your name in print.
