Insightful articles are the most important thing. It’s not enough to just write the same stuff everyone else writes, there has to be a cool style or unique spin on issues. Usually a consistent style throughout sets an online mag apart from the others.
Also, discussion boards always keep people coming back, because talk groups are formed.

Good art is an attention grabber. I always peruse the table of contents. One of my favorite online magazines is Moondance, Celebrating Creative Women at They always have fabulous art and great writing involving women around the world.
