What publishers and magazines will buy short stories and vignettes from young writers?

PandaFace asked:

I’m having trouble finding publishers, magazines, contests, etc., to send my short stories and vignettes to, especially since I don’t really want to sell my work for very little or nothing. Are there any good places I can send them to?
Also, do publishers ever buy short vignettes? If so, where can I send them?

How about asking around other writers around you?

Rather than doing an online search, it’d be better to ask editors, go-betweens and the other people related to the profession in your area.

There are also a lot of contests held for beginners where the winner gets a contract as prize. Check out some regional magazines advertising this.

College professors can be good advisors, too.

Moreover, if you are a beginner, I’d say that if you are really keen, you’ve got to start somewhere even if you are paid less than you deserve at first. But you should take care that the situation does not persist.
